My two cents on the #fairygate

What is the #fairygate?

As an introduction for those not paying attention to Pokémon 24/7 and having a real life out there, the #fairygate consisted in Hiro announcing on his Twitter account that the upcoming Pokémon X and Y will be featuring a new Pokémon type: Fairy.

In addition, Hiro also said that Sylveon, Xerneas and Clefairy will fall under the Fairy type, while Yveltal will be Dark/Flying.

Is the Spanish Official Nintendo Magazine the source?

First and foremost, I have to clarify something people are saying about the life of Hiro and my own: that we get an insider scoop into upcoming Pokémon games because we work at the Spanish Official Nintendo Magazine.

The Spanish Official Nintendo Magazine does not have anything to do with all this because basically they don't have a clue. Nintendo and TPCi follow very strict policies as to which contents are to be disclosed from insiders to trusted media and to the public. The magazine staff simply could not reveal anything to us because they know nothing, as TPCi is not revealing any information to trusted media more than a couple of days in advance, and subject to strict embargoes and conditions.

For the record, Hiro is currently collaborating with the magazine on a regular basis, and I am still in contact with the magazine for specific articles, interviews, etc. I was never fired or reprimanded by ONM's staff for any of my activities on my website, nor did I breach my NDA with them. I simply quit because I just have not enough time with my "real" work as a lawyer.

So TPCi has strict policies?

TPCi is literally paranoid about keeping information on unreleased Pokémon games out of the reach of the public until they decide the appropriate moment to reveal each piece of information. Not only they follow the usual embargo practices (i.e., they provide information to trusted media and prohibit them to publish it until a specific date), but have also other conditions and policies in place.

We *may* have contributed to TPCi growing ever more paranoid, as our past exploits proved TPCi had not controlled its information well. Their security has increased a lot because of this. This is understandable, but is making TPCi move more and more away from their fans. Sometimes control is just not the right answer.

As an example of these policies, they instruct media on how every little piece of TPCi's goodwill and copyrighted material must be presented to the public. They don't care about fansites on this topic, but whish to guide us all to certain terms by mere imitation of the official and quasi-official media. Needless to say I try to do exactly the opposite here on my website. I will not specify any of these policies as this is insider information of TPCi and I don't want to make them any more mad than necessary. Just question yourself as to why you use certain linguistic constructions, why you put (or don't) certain Pokémon-related words together, etc. That sort of stuff. You also follow them to a certain degree.

Is TPCi aware of the #fairygate?

Probably. Hi Mike (or whoever is reading this from TPCi).

Is the information real?

I sincerely don't know 100%.

Actually, I am not sure about what exactly is real information. I guess probably the Fairy type is real, and predictably the type of Sylveon. The types of Xerneas and Yveltal are likely to be as leaked. As to Clefairy, who knows.

Why are you being so cautious?

This is the basic difference between Hiro and me. Hiro took too many risks in revealing this information. Not only did he do so in such a blunt way, but also did so without being 100% sure about the information being actually true. He is lucky that he has convinced a lot of people based on previous feats, whereas the possibility that there is no Fairy type whatsoever in XY would only be confirmed when the games are released (by negative confirmation) and nobody will ever pay attention to the fact that Hiro was wrong. Not my style, that's why I didn't allow this as a news story at Pokéxperto.

In past events (specifically BW Pokémon), I was sure the information was real. I took for granted that nobody would believe in what I was saying, so I held the information with me for weeks deciding what to do with it. Eventually, some unconfirmed images of new Pokémon appeared in the Internet. Those images matched the ones I had. This confirmed the information I had and allowed me to continue with the fun. Hiro revealing his fanart of Purrloin mere hours before it being revealed on Pokémon Sunday in Japan also helped.

Something similar happened with DP English Pokémon names in the previous generation, thanks to the courtesy of the always helpful SPP. And more recently, in an awkward manner, with the new "Forme" of Mewtwo (for clarification, I posted this as a joke weeks before Mewtwo was even confirmed to appear in the upcoming Pokémon movie).

Shouldn't your site have been closed after past events?

See, being both a lawyer and a Pokémon fan has some advantages. I know something about copyright law, which led me to follow the fanart strategy last time. We got a C&D letter from Nintendo's lawyer Cooley requesting us to remove the alpha sprites from BW and the fanarts of Hiro. I removed the former, but not the latter, based on exceptions under copyright law. I thought that revealing those sprites after the games were released in practice (but some days before official release date) would be safe enough. TPCi did not agree with me on that.

Also, TPCi gets mad at people not doing what they expect, but there is probably a certain limit as to what they want to do. My website is probably more for their benefit than for their harm, it being the most visited Pokémon in Spanish as of now. Actually, even though TPCi sometimes takes idiotic decisions (e.g. VGC), I honestly pretend no harm to them or the Pokémon franchise in revealing any information. I am a Pokémon fan first and foremost and want this franchise to grow more complex and interesting.

Doing harm to the Pokémon franchise would be very sad of me. For example, I could have tried to register domain names of new Pokémon names in the past, which could have worked for my benefit, even more so using whois privacy and porn ads. It is simply not my intention to take advantage nor harm Pokémon with my leaks.

I think TPCi is aware of this. I run this website and get this far within the Pokémon franchise because I am a Pokémon fan. We should be able to coexist somehow. I have also grown bored of the fun of leaking stuff. Way too risky for a little attention.

Finally, are you an attention seeker?

Probably a little bit, yes. Everybody likes to be cheered and paid attention to. It just grows boring and stressful after a while.
